Echelon is a space combat simulator with wire-frame graphics. Fly around an alien planet, looking for clues to a "mysterious event" in the planet's past.

The game has a feature that allows people to play without concerning themselves with battle, or turn off the "exploration" and concentrate solely on combat.

Trivia

Unmarked even on the Hint Map were several unusual locations and structures, including a McDonalds, the Golden Gate bridge, and others. They could be blown up, and the bridges could be flown under and through (lengthwise).

The Commodore 64 version of Echelon shipped with the "Lip Stik", a headset and microphone that purported to take voice commands, but in reality just acted as a firebutton. It plugged directly into the joystick port.

Description from the packaging:

3-D Space Flight Simulator.
Your orders... To report to Echelon, a top secret flight facility, to be trained to operate the 21st Century's most awesome combat and exploration vehicle, the Lockheed C-104 Tomahawk. When ready, you will be assigned to a newly established patrol zone. Through the retrieval of artifacts and information, you must find the solution to a series of mysterious and puzzling events happening inside this area. A word of advice... you are not the first pilot to have this assignment... use caution or it may be your last!

Echelon is a true 3-D simulator that puts you at the controls of the C-104 Tomahawk and in the heart of the action. The craft can be operated inside the patrol zone under 3 different classifications. These include:

1. Scientific: This level is for those who wish to fly, explore and gather information without being attacked.

2. Patrol: Encounter enemy spacecraft while exploring the unknown.

3. Military: Non-stop action facing hostile enemy spacecraft.

Echelon includes the LipStik voice activated control headset. It plugs into control port #2 and functions with your joystick to enhance and expand your game playing enjoyment. The LipStik uses "voice activation" to initiate various control sequences. For example, instead of pushing the joystick button to fire your weapons, just say "Fire" or "Launch", and the computer responds. Using the headset adds a new dimension of realism to the game. It's a feeling you must experience for yourself. The LipStik is a $19.95 value and is included Free with Echelon.
